Tag-Team Revolution: 2XKO Unveils Game-Changing

Jan 04,25

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article explores its innovative tag team mechanics and the playable demo showcased at EVO 2024.

A New Twist on Tag Team Battles

2XKO's Innovative Tag Team System

2XKO introduces "Duo Play," a fresh take on the traditional 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This creates thrilling 2v2 matches with four players total, each team consisting of a "Point" character and an "Assist." The game even supports 2v1 showdowns, where one player manages a duo against two opponents.

The tag system itself is built around three core mechanics:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character calls upon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly switch roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos to save their partner.

Unlike some tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Even defeated champions remain active as Assists, offering strategic support.

Strategic Synergy with "Fuses"

Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options that modify team playstyles. The demo featured five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks for devastating combos.
  • FURY: Increased damage and dash cancel below 40% health.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Grants the Assist multiple actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's ability to enhance player expression and create powerful combos through coordinated teamwork.

The Playable Roster

2XKO's Diverse Champion Lineup

The demo showcased six League of Legends champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique movesets reflecting their in-game abilities. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their future inclusion has been confirmed.

Alpha Lab Playtest and Beyond

2XKO joins the free-to-play fighting game scene, launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. Registration for the Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19) is now open. Check the linked article for more details!
