Switch 2 Features New Controller Functions

New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent on February 6, 2025, detailing Nintendo's latest innovation for the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers. This patent suggests that the new Joy-Con will feature mouse-like capabilities, a feature hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer where the controller was seen being dragged across a flat surface. This move by Nintendo confirms the rumors and adds an exciting new dimension to the Switch 2's gameplay possibilities.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Switch 2's Joy-Con retains the detachable design familiar to fans of the original Nintendo Switch, but with a significant upgrade: the ability to function as a mouse. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface." This feature could revolutionize how players interact with games on the Switch 2.

In addition to the mouse functionality, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new dock that supports up to two controllers simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment also connects the Joy-Con to the console, complete with a wrist strap reminiscent of the original Switch's design. The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse-like operation. These can be combined into a single controller using a separate attachment.

It's important to note that the features outlined in the patent may not all make it to the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these details.
