Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game, despite initially positive reviews, has underwhelmed both critically and commercially. Its combat and stealth mechanics have drawn considerable player criticism, a factor contributing to disappointing sales figures.

Ubisoft acknowledged in September that Outlaws fell short of projected sales targets, leading to a sharp drop in the company's stock price. This underperformance is further highlighted by a recent report indicating that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released in 2023, has outsold Outlaws. While precise sales figures remain undisclosed, Outlaws' ranking as the 47th best-selling game in Europe during 2024 underscores its commercial struggles.

Several factors likely contribute to Jedi: Survivor's success over Outlaws. As a sequel to the popular Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and critical acclaim. Furthermore, a 2023 update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One generated renewed interest.

In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction despite ongoing post-launch support from Massive Entertainment. While updates and DLC, including "Wild Card" (featuring Lando Calrissian) and the upcoming "A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka), are planned, they haven't been enough to significantly boost sales. The game's underperformance casts a shadow over Ubisoft's future and raises questions about the viability of open-world Star Wars titles.
