Splitgate 2: The Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrives in 2025

1047 Games, the creators of the hit multiplayer FPS Splitgate, has unveiled its sequel, Splitgate 2, launching in 2025. This new installment promises a fresh take on the "Halo meets Portal" formula that captivated players worldwide.

A Familiar Experience, Reimagined

Revealed via a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 aims for longevity. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game that thrives for a decade or more. While the original drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the developers recognized the need for a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop to succeed in the modern gaming landscape. This led to a reimagining of the portal mechanics, aiming for a more balanced experience for players of all skill levels, as explained by Head of Marketing Hilary Goldstein.

Built using Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 introduces a faction system alongside familiar elements, promising a completely fresh feel. The game will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.

The original Splitgate, known for its unique blend of fast-paced arena combat and Portal-inspired wormhole mechanics, gained immense popularity after its demo release, accumulating 600,000 downloads in a single month. This success led to server upgrades to handle the influx of players. After a period in early access, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, before development ceased to focus on this ambitious sequel.

New Factions, Maps, and More

The Sol Splitgate League takes center stage in Splitgate 2, introducing three distinct factions: Aeros (emphasizing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While details remain scarce, the developers confirmed it's not a hero shooter.

Gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the trailer showcases impressive visuals, including new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.

A Deep Dive into Lore

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to explore the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
