Set to launch on September 26, the Marvel’s Spider-Man set will be the second fully draftable, Standard-legal addition to Magic's Universes Beyond line, following the Final Fantasy set. Unlike the Lord of the Rings set from 2023, which was Modern-legal, this set will not include preconstructed Commander decks. However, the cards in the Scene Box, as shown above, are designed specifically for Commander and **will not** be Standard-legal.

While last year's Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others marked Magic's initial foray into the Marvel universe, Spider-Man represents the first comprehensive set inspired by the comics. According to Max McCall, Executive Producer at Wizards of the Coast, a full set was necessary to fully capture the essence of Spider-Man and his extensive rogues' gallery.

"Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall explains. "Including characters from the Spider-Man canon in a broader set would mean leaving out too many important figures. We could have included Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-specific set, but there wouldn't have been space for characters like Aunt May."

McCall also highlights that designing for a Universes Beyond set "flips the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike typical Magic sets, which must establish their setting and location through gameplay, Universes Beyond sets can leverage the existing familiarity fans have with characters like Spider-Man. "When we create a card that embodies the concept of great power and great responsibility, we can introduce more mechanical complexity because fans already understand the underlying story. We don't need to simplify Universes Beyond cards; we just need to choose moments that resonate with fans."

Mark Rosewater, Head Designer at Wizards of the Coast, discusses how they translate these iconic moments into gameplay. He points out that Magic's color pie is versatile enough to represent both heroism and villainy across all five colors. For instance, Spider-Man embodies the white, blue, and green color pies. "Spider-Man's obligation to use his powers to help others aligns with the white color pie. His origin from a scientific mishap and his inventive gadgets fit the blue color pie, while his animal-based powers and destiny connect him to the green color pie."

"We're not limiting ourselves to any one comic run or series," Rosewater adds. The set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all showcased in the gallery above. While there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the set will feature the return of Welcome Decks, which are introductory decks provided by game stores to help new players learn the game in a friendly environment.

In addition to this year’s Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced a set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Before that, players can look forward to two more in-universe sets: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
