Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-esque Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit and gameplay of the acclaimed 2017 release, Sonic Mania. This pixel-art platformer caters perfectly to fans of classic Sonic titles and retro aesthetics.

The game's second demo, released in early 2025, offers a compelling taste of what's to come. It features the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – navigating fresh, exciting zones. Adding to the roster are two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and Tunnel the Mole (a character originating from Sonic Frontiers). Each character boasts unique level paths, enhancing replayability.

Inspired by the absence of a true Sonic Mania sequel, Sonic Galactic fills a void in the hearts of many fans. While Sonic Superstars offered a 3D evolution of the 2D formula, Sonic Galactic stays true to the beloved pixel art style of Sonic Mania, delivering a nostalgic experience. The game's development, spanning at least four years, began with its debut at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo. Starteam aimed to create a game that captures the feel of a 32-bit era title, imagining a hypothetical Sega Saturn release.

Gameplay and Length:

Sonic Galactic's gameplay is heavily influenced by Sonic Mania. The special stages, reminiscent of Mania's, present a 3D ring-collecting challenge against the clock. A typical playthrough focusing solely on Sonic's levels takes around an hour. Including the stages for the other characters, the total playtime of the demo adds up to approximately two hours. This second demo provides a significant amount of content for a fan-made project.
