Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Cease-and-Desist Notice

Jun 22,25

Smash Together, a niche dating app designed to connect Smash Bros. enthusiasts, has announced it received a cease-and-desist letter just two days before its planned open beta launch on May 15. The developers revealed the unfortunate news via a tweet featuring a melancholic Yoshi meme captioned: “We got cease and desisted.”

While the team did not name the sender of the legal notice, many are pointing fingers at Nintendo, given the app’s heavy reliance on Super Smash Bros., one of the company's flagship franchises. The unofficial dating platform marketed itself as the ultimate matchmaker for Smash players, promising to help users find both in-game partners and real-life connections based on shared gaming interests.

The app’s concept included features like listing your main character, showcasing notable victories, and answering prompts such as “I’m looking for… Someone who can make it out of pools at a major.” These elements were clearly inspired by traditional dating apps but with a distinct Super Smash Bros. theme woven throughout.

Though intellectual property concerns likely played a role in the legal action, the very idea of a dating app built around a competitive video game may have been enough to raise red flags for the rights holder. As of now, there has been no official statement from the Smash Together team regarding potential workarounds or plans to relaunch the service under a different theme or brand.
