May 18,25

Ubisoft is setting the stage for an epic Year 2 of Skull and Bones, aiming to make it the most expansive year yet for the pirate multiplayer game. The company is rolling out significant content updates, including new game modes, ships, a Kraken, and a highly anticipated feature: land combat.

During a special Year 2 showcase that premiered yesterday, Ubisoft unveiled its roadmap for the upcoming year. The presentation was brimming with exciting content, but it's Season 3: Guts and Glory, launching this fall, that promises to introduce the long-awaited land combat. This new feature will allow players to step away from the sea and engage in swordfights and gunfights on land. As part of the Rogue Warlord additions, players will explore sandy beaches and damp caves to rescue skilled crewmembers called Officers. A teaser video offered a glimpse of what's to come, but fans will have to wait until later this year to experience it fully.

While land combat is the headline feature, Skull and Bones Year 2 has much more in store. Season 1: Ascent into Chaos kicks off today, April 15, introducing a loot-enhancing item ascension feature, challenging World Tiers, a new Schooner medium ship, and the team-based Death Tides PvP mode. Season 2: Oaths of War, set to launch in summer 2025, will feature Megaforts and the massive Frigate large ships. Season 4: Eye of the Beast, arriving this winter, will introduce the Kraken, Hunter’s Guild, and the Corvette large ship.

If you're intrigued by what's on offer, you'll be pleased to know that Skull and Bones is hosting a free weekend from April 17 – 21. This is your chance to dive into pirate PvP action and even purchase the game at a discounted rate, though the specific price has not been disclosed yet.

Skull and Bones launched on February 16, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S, earning a 7/10 in our review. While Ubisoft has not released official sales figures, they did mention achieving "record player engagement" shortly after launch. Interestingly, the release of Skull and Bones also saw a 200% surge in players for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.
