Virtua Fighter's Resurgence: A Glimpse into the Future

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of dormancy. Developed by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a sneak peek at the game's visual style and direction.

The last significant Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster. While the new footage isn't actual gameplay, it showcases in-engine graphics, hinting at a visual style blending elements of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6, moving away from the franchise's classic polygonal aesthetic. The trailer features Akira, the series' iconic character, sporting new attire, deviating from his traditional look.

First shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, the video depicts meticulously choreographed combat, more akin to a cinematic sequence than raw gameplay. This highly stylized presentation emphasizes the visual advancements.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development. Details about the new game remain scarce, but Sega's commitment to reviving the Virtua Fighter franchise is evident, as expressed by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi in the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game's release date is yet to be announced.
