HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will resurrect cut content from the original The Last of Us Part II video game, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head, Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will feature "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the "Lost Levels" partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer varied tones, ranging from the relatively calmer party scene and boar hunt to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monsters in the Seattle sewers.

The inclusion of this cut content promises a gripping viewing experience. Druckmann hinted at the appearance of a previously unshown, "pretty prominent" character, mirroring the Season 1 introduction of Frank. Season 2 will introduce a substantial cast of new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel, among others. Catherine O'Hara's role, however, remains shrouded in mystery.

The premiere of Season 2, Episode 1, is slated for April, offering a relatively short wait for answers to some of these mysteries. However, HBO's plan to extend the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II beyond a single season suggests that some questions may linger. Showrunner Craig Mazin previously indicated that Part II contains a significant amount of story material. While Season 3 isn't yet confirmed, Season 2 is designed with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.
