Scarlett Johansson, a two-time Academy Award nominee, expressed disbelief that Avengers: Endgame, where she portrayed Black Widow, received only a single nomination for visual effects.

“How did this movie miss out on Oscar recognition?” Johansson asked in a Vanity Fair interview, reflecting on the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster. “It was a monumental film that defied expectations, delivering both as a cinematic work and as one of the highest-grossing movies ever.”

Avengers: Endgame is widely regarded as a standout in the MCU, yet the Academy rarely honors superhero films in major categories like acting or directing. To date, Black Panther in 2018 remains the only Marvel film to earn a best picture nomination. Still, Johansson’s performance as Natasha Romanoff, from her debut in 2010’s Iron Man to her sacrifice in Endgame, was undeniably compelling.

In the same Vanity Fair interview, Johansson indicated a return to the MCU is unlikely. “It’s hard to imagine how going back would make sense for me or the character,” she said.

“I cherish my time with my MCU family and would love to stay connected, but Natasha’s story feels complete. I don’t want to disrupt that, for myself or the fans.”

Following Black Widow’s death in Endgame, Johansson reprised her role in the 2021 prequel Black Widow, which she also executive produced.
