Wheel of Time Fans Petition for Season 4 as Signatures Top 120,000

The future of "The Wheel of Time" appears bleak following Amazon Prime Video's decision to end the series after Season 3. A new report indicates that the show is not being actively offered to other streaming platforms. Adding to the disappointment, Brandon Sanderson, who completed Robert Jordan's epic book series, has shared pointed criticism regarding the executives behind the cancellation.

Last month, Deadline revealed that Prime Video, after "lengthy deliberations," opted against renewing "The Wheel of Time" for a fourth season. While executives reportedly admired the show, they could not justify the financial investment required for its continuation.

The series is an adaptation of Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy saga, starring Rosamund Pike. After a divisive first two seasons that sparked controversy among book fans for significant deviations, Season 3 was widely seen as a critical turning point, successfully winning back the core audience and seemingly setting the stage for an even stronger future.

However, the production costs proved too high for co-producers Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. It is notable that Amazon MGM Studios also bankrolls the incredibly expensive "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."

As Deadline's sources explained:

...the overall performance of Season 3 did not sufficiently offset the show's substantial budget. Prime Video, after exploring various scenarios and consulting with lead studio Sony TV, concluded that a renewal was not financially viable.

Brandon Sanderson addressed the cancellation in the comments section of a recent YouTube video. "I was not meaningfully involved," he stated. "My knowledge is limited to public information. I was initially informed that renegotiations were underway and likely to succeed. After two months of silence, I learned the final news alongside everyone else."

"I consider this a great shame," Sanderson continued. "Despite my own critiques of the adaptation, it had cultivated a dedicated fanbase that deserved better than cancellation after its strongest season. I will not miss being largely sidelined; the producers seemed to value my name for credibility but not my creative input."

Sanderson's comments reflect clear frustration with the decision-makers, echoing the sentiments of fans who witnessed the show's significant quality improvement and hoped to see the narrative reach its conclusion.

Compounding the situation, a new report from TVLine, citing "well-placed sources," claims that "The Wheel of Time" is not currently being shopped to other streamers. This dashes hopes for a potential Season 4 revival elsewhere.

In response, over 120,000 supporters have signed an online petition urging platforms to "Save The Wheel of Time." The petition organizers advocate to "Finish the story. It deserves to be told in full!"

Unfortunately, these appeals may go unanswered. Some fans hold out hope that Apple TV+, known for investing in high-budget science fiction and fantasy series, might acquire the show. However, given Apple's existing and crowded development slate, this prospect seems increasingly unlikely.

Consequently, this particular adaptation of "The Wheel of Time" seems to have reached its end. It marks another unsatisfactory attempt to bring one of fantasy literature's most revered series to the screen.
