Robert Pattinson Out as DCU Batman

James Gunn and Peter Safran have officially announced that The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman to the DCU, effectively ruling out Robert Pattinson for this role. During a DC Studios presentation, the co-chiefs confirmed that Pattinson will continue to portray Batman exclusively within Matt Reeves' The Batman Epic Crime Saga.

Gunn stated, "It's certainly not the plan," when addressing the possibility of Pattinson crossing over into the broader DCU. Safran echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to introduce a new Batman, saying, "And we love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with The Brave and the Bold."

This clarification comes after earlier speculation fueled by comments from Reeves, who had hinted at the potential for Pattinson's Batman to appear across the DCU. Speaking to Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes, Reeves mentioned, "It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense," while emphasizing his focus on The Batman Epic Crime Saga.

Despite the separation of universes, Gunn and Safran expressed their enthusiasm for Reeves' upcoming project, The Batman Part 2. Safran noted, "We love Matt’s vision for The Batman Part 2, and we're looking forward to this film as much as you are." He also revealed that while the script for The Batman Part 2 is still in progress, what they've seen so far is promising.

On the other hand, The Brave and the Bold is currently in "very active development" with Gunn and Safran deeply involved in crafting its script. They plan to present the script to potential director Andy Muschietti once it's ready. Safran hinted that more details about The Brave and the Bold will be shared "very soon."

The Batman Part 2 faced another delay, now set for release on October 1, 2027, marking a five-year gap since the original film. When asked about the release window for The Brave and the Bold, Safran cryptically responded, "Well, I think we've announced October, 2027 there will be a Batman movie. That is all we can tell you right now."

While fans await The Brave and the Bold, a brief glimpse of Gunn's Batman was seen in Episode 6 of Creature Commandos. The image showed Batman in his iconic costume, standing on a rooftop, but offered little detail about Gunn's vision for the character. Gunn explained to Rotten Tomatoes TV that he requested a more silhouetted appearance to keep the character's design under wraps for now.

The cameo in Creature Commandos confirms Batman's established presence within the DCU, indicating that his origin story won't need retelling. Gunn also teased a future collaboration between Batman and Superman within the DCU, expressing his deep affection for the character: "I just love Batman. I love him. I've loved him since I was a little kid. He's one of my favorite characters... He's the most popular superhero in the world and I can't wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman, and together."
