RDR2 Rumored for Switch 2 by 2025 with Next-Gen Upgrade

May 28,25

Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the market by the end of 2025. Additionally, there's talk of a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of the game. According to GameReactor, insiders close to Rockstar have suggested that not only is a Switch 2 version of this Wild West epic in the works, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" is also being developed to enhance the experience on current-gen consoles.

While details remain sparse, GameReactor's sources indicate that both the port and the upgrade could be released as early as later this year. These rumors are supported by similar reports from Nintenduo, which suggest the Switch 2 version could launch within Take-Two's current financial year, ending on March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be available digitally only or if physical copies will also be offered.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10 score. Our review praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."

The potential arrival of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch 2 might not be entirely unexpected. In a recent Q&A session with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He highlighted improved support from Nintendo for third-party publishers, noting, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform."

Zelnick elaborated, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Specifically, Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 on June 5, the launch day of the Switch 2, alongside titles from the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (though specific games and release dates are unclear), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These titles are not surprising given Take-Two's history with the Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest a broader openness to future releases, particularly from Take-Two's back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could potentially find their way to the Switch 2.
