Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire Cars

Jan 21,25

In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Luckily, many cars remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring is the solution. This guide outlines the process and requirements.

Hotwiring in Project Zomboid is surprisingly straightforward, but requires preparation. While not demanding a top-tier build, meeting specific prerequisites is crucial.

Hotwiring Mechanics

Successfully hotwiring a car allows operation as long as fuel and condition permit, even without the correct keys. However, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession at character creation bypasses these skill requirements.

How to Hotwire a Car:

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Select "Hotwire" and wait.

Once prerequisites are met, these three steps will hotwire any operable vehicle. The process is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.

Skill Leveling (Electrical & Mechanics):

For non-Burglar characters, skill levels increase through in-game activities:

  • Electrical: Disassembling electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
  • Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.

Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. These are commonly found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and on bookshelves. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command (refer to in-game chat for syntax) to directly grant skill XP. Appropriate tools (like screwdrivers) are needed for disassembly/installation. Right-clicking a vehicle and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
