Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Jan 23,25

In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, keeping the undead hordes at bay requires strategic defense. This guide focuses on a fundamental yet effective method: barricading windows.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board up your windows, you'll need specific materials: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Gather these essential items and then right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Hammers and nails are typically found in locations where you'd expect to find them in real life – toolboxes, garages, sheds, closets, etc. Wooden planks are commonly located at construction sites, or you can salvage them by breaking down wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.) in a pinch. Admins can utilize the "/additem" command for convenience.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access. The more planks you add, the more time it takes for the undead to breach your defenses. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to do so.

It's important to know that large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as window barriers; characters and zombies will simply pass through them.

While this guide focuses on basic wooden barricades, stronger defenses can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, though these require sufficient Metalworking skill.
