Pokémon Fans Are Frantically Trying to Work Out How Pokémon Legends: Z-A Connects to Other Pokémon Games
This morning, we got our first extended look at Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Game Freak's futuristic Pokémon game set in the familiar Lumiose City from Pokémon X/Y. While the trailer showcased rooftop running, battle changes, and Mega Evolution, many questions remain about its placement within the Pokémon timeline and potential returning characters.
The Pokémon Legends series, unlike most standalone titles, incorporates time travel. Legends: Arceus featured locations from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, set centuries in the past, with characters resembling ancestors from other games, or even a direct transplant from Pokémon Black and White. This fuels speculation about Pokémon Legends: Z-A's setting, potential time travel elements, and familiar faces in Lumiose City.
Since the trailer's release, fans have unearthed numerous connections. The most obvious is AZ, directly mentioned and shown running a hotel in Lumiose City. Given his immortality (granted 3000 years before X/Y), his presence is plausible regardless of the game's timeline. He appears significantly happier, reunited with his Floette.
Subtle connections abound. The potential presence of the Looker Bureau is a popular theory. Fans have noted a building resembling the Bureau from previous games, suggesting Looker or his protégé, Emma, might appear in Z-A.
Another intriguing theory links the protagonists to Ethan and Lyra from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Their resemblance has sparked speculation of a time-travel scenario involving them being transported to a futuristic Lumiose.
Alternatively, fans suggest a connection to Professor Sycamore and Grace (the protagonist's mother in X/Y). This theory, particularly the Grace connection, is less concrete but interesting given the Legends series' focus on ancestry.
Intriguingly, these theories aren't mutually exclusive. The game's placement within the timeline remains unclear. Pokémon's timeline is loosely sequential, incorporating alternate realities and time travel (as seen in Legends: Arceus). AZ's presence suggests a post-X/Y setting, but this could be centuries later given his immortality. Lumiose City's futuristic size hints at decades, if not centuries, of development. This implies the protagonists and Looker Bureau personnel might be descendants of the characters they resemble.
Another point of fascination is a mysterious woman in the key art, resembling a Hex Maniac from Pokémon X/Y. This is particularly interesting due to the unsolved mystery of the "Ghost Girl" from X/Y. This Hex Maniac's appearance in Z-A renews hope for an explanation, suggesting she might have haunted the building for centuries.
Undoubtedly, further discoveries and connections will emerge in the coming days. With a planned release in late 2025, we have ample time to dissect the new information and speculate on the mysteries of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Stay tuned for more updates.
