From the video, it's evident that the Nintendo Switch 2 is larger in every dimension than its predecessor. The screen, Joy-Cons, and even the sticks are bigger. While exact specifications are still under wraps, insiders suggest the Switch 2 will measure 116 mm in height, 270 mm in width, and 14 mm in thickness. This makes it 3.1 cm wider and 1.4 cm taller than the original Switch. Rumors also hint at an 8-inch screen, compared to the 7-inch screen on the OLED version of the first Switch.

Design

The video presentation introduces a new magnetic Joy-Con system, secured with two recessed contacts in the console's body for portable mode. Insiders assure that these contacts are robust and cannot be easily broken, as they are enclosed by the console's frame. The SL and SR buttons are now larger and metallic, providing the magnetic connection. Although this design leads to side bezels around the screen, the magnets are strong enough to prevent accidental detachment of the controllers. The video also shows that the Joy-Cons now slide to the side after pressing a button, and the holder that turns them into a full joystick has a flat upper grip and a side-insert mechanism.

The Joy-Con buttons have also been slightly enlarged, and rumors suggest the use of Hall effect sensors for the sticks, reducing the risk of drift. However, the IR camera has been removed, which might affect backward compatibility for games like Ring Fit Adventure. The console's top bezel features a microphone and a USB Type-C port, potentially for wired joystick support and voice chat in games.

What's inside?

While we await official details at the Nintendo Direct on April 2, speculation suggests the Switch 2's power will be comparable to that of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There's hope for Quad HD resolution in docked mode, and insiders have shared potential specifications including a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 processor, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and support for microSDHC, microSDXC, and microSD Express memory cards. The console is expected to launch with an LCD screen, not OLED as many had hoped, but it promises to support many AAA titles and potentially even Genshin Impact.
