A Sony warranty may or may not apply, but Amazon Resale includes a 30-day return policy. This deal was so compelling that I purchased one myself.

The PlayStation Portal, Sony’s handheld accessory for the PS5, resembles a DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen integrated in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The Portal replicates the DualSense’s features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in place of the touchpad. You can stream games remotely, provided you have a highly stable, high-speed internet connection. Note that the Portal is not a standalone device and requires a PS5 to function.

The PS Portal no longer requires a PS5 for gameplay. Sony’s recent update allows streaming directly from the PlayStation Now cloud service, bypassing the need for a $500 console. With this feature, Portal owners can connect to Sony’s cloud servers (updated with beta quality-of-life improvements in April) and access over 120 games, including Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A subscription to the top tier of PlayStation Plus is required, but $18 monthly is more affordable than purchasing new games individually.

Streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi at home isn’t exclusive to the PlayStation Portal. The PS Remote Play app on mobile devices, including handhelds like the Steam Deck, offers similar functionality. However, setup is more complex, and you may lose some DualSense features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"The PlayStation Portal exceeded my expectations, turning skepticism into genuine appreciation. It offers a superior experience compared to using a phone with an attached controller and performs far better than I anticipated. I love the flexibility to play my PS5 anywhere with reliable Wi-Fi, especially when my family is using the TV for other gaming, like the Switch. While it fully depends on a PlayStation 5 to operate, its main limitations are the inability to connect to Wi-Fi requiring browser login and the lack of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these drawbacks, it’s the best solution for PlayStation Remote Play and a fantastic option for PS5 owners who enjoy handheld gaming or share a household TV."
