PGA Tour 2K25: First Look at Enhanced Gameplay and Features

Aug 03,25

While a revival of NFL 2K might top many fans’ wish lists for 2K’s next sports simulation, PGA Tour 2K25 proves golf deserves attention. After spending a few hours with the game, it’s clear there’s plenty to enjoy.

HB Studios, the developer behind the title, has been refining its golf simulation since The Golf Club debuted a decade ago, evolving into PGA Tour 2K with 2K’s backing in 2020. That expertise is evident in 2K25, where flaws are hard to spot during hands-on play. Is it the most visually stunning sports game? Not quite. Could it use more real-world courses? Definitely. (It does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship.) Did the PC version show occasional framerate hiccups when surveying holes? Yes. But the core experience is undeniably engaging.

The revamped EvoSwing mechanic stands out. Using a controller, the right stick option—pulling back to wind up and pushing forward to strike—feels intuitive. Difficulty settings range from forgiving, ideal for casual players, to unforgiving, where a slight misstep can lead to a slice or hook. The Perfect Swing mode ensures a relaxed experience by softening the penalty for minor errors. Players can also use the LB button to shape shots for greater control. Improved ball physics add realism, and the ability to shift laterally in the tee box to avoid obstacles, like a tree, enhances strategy. Playing as cover star Tiger Woods, a golf legend, only amplifies the fun.

MyCareer mode has been enriched with narrative elements, adding depth seen in other sports titles. For instance, I was offered a movie role alongside Christopher “Shooter McGavin” McDonald—though not as his iconic Happy Gilmore character due to licensing. Choosing between hero or villain roles impacts MyCareer stats. Gear purchased with earned VC also boosts attributes, while skills improve through gameplay and victories. New Quests, like achieving 10 consecutive birdies, offer dynamic goals refreshed regularly.

The MyPlayer creator allows for quick customization, getting close to a personalized avatar without extensive tweaking. New skill trees add depth to progression. While I couldn’t test multiplayer, features like ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies promise social fun, reminiscent of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer options accommodate players across time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 delivers a polished experience without major missteps, though it may not spark overwhelming excitement. It’s a reliable choice for golf enthusiasts or those seeking a low-pressure game. A free demo, available now, lets you try it firsthand.
