"New Patent Confirms Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features"

May 30,25

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, especially regarding significant updates to its Joy-Cons, as revealed by recently surfaced patents. Although Nintendo has yet to confirm the Switch 2 officially, reports suggest that the new Joy-Cons will attach magnetically and even function like a computer mouse. These innovations are now virtually confirmed due to several patents filed by Nintendo, detailing both magnetic attachment mechanisms and mouse-like functionalities.

According to the patent documentation, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, comprising a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." The patent further explains that users must press two buttons located longitudinally on the top surface of the protrusion to detach the Joy-Cons. "The first button and the second button are to be pressed by a user. The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force."

Illustrations within the patent depict the Joy-Cons being utilized as a mouse, with players holding the controller sideways and using the shoulder buttons as mouse clicks. The R1 and R2 buttons are designed to act as the left and right mouse buttons, respectively, while the joysticks may offer scrolling functions.

Additional illustrations highlight potential configurations, such as dual-mouse setups or using one Joy-Con as a mouse alongside the other as a traditional game controller.

Magnetic attachment for the Joy-Cons was among the initial leaks surrounding the Switch 2. The mouse-like function emerged later but remains unconfirmed until now. However, a teaser video released in January showcased the Joy-Cons gliding across surfaces like a computer mouse, subtly hinting at this feature.
