Master the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Nothing is more satisfying in an action RPG than perfectly deflecting an enemy's attack, turning their aggression into a devastating counter-offensive. This guide details how to parry in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

Before you can parry, you must unlock the ability. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top-middle column. Unlocking requires allocating an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Three ranks of Parry exist:

At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability becomes available, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Parrying requires precise timing; block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and visual cue confirm a successful parry, staggering the enemy. Mastering the timing requires practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Parry Limitations

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle must be dodged. Furthermore, only melee weapons (one-handed, two-handed, or a shield in your off-hand) can parry. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot be used to parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's a highly effective defensive and offensive tactic for melee-focused characters. However, ranged builds may find it less useful. Avowed's respec system allows for easy adjustments if you decide to change your combat style.
