Disney movie veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with the House of Mouse once again, this time to bring the classic animated icon Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to life in a new Disney+ series. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to create this exciting new show. He's set to take on the roles of writer and producer for the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series, though further details such as the plot and casting are still under wraps.

Oswald holds a special place in Disney’s vast array of animated characters, but his history with the company has been tumultuous. Originally conceived by Walt Disney himself, Oswald starred in only 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928 before a rights dispute led to Universal taking control. This challenging period for Disney, as detailed in our in-depth look at Disney’s 100-year history, eventually paved the way for the creation of Mickey Mouse.

Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, they released their first new original short starring the character in 95 years. Now, it seems Disney is eager to revitalize Oswald beyond a mere symbol of its history. While a release date for Favreau's project remains undisclosed, fans can anticipate this innovative blend of live-action and animation in the near future.

While Favreau focuses on reviving one of Disney’s oldest animated characters, he's also deeply involved in some of its newest franchises. Star Wars enthusiasts will recognize him as a key figure driving the saga forward with projects like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. Additionally, Favreau has been a significant part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past 15 years, both behind and in front of the camera, and directed the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can look forward to his directorial touch once more with The Mandalorian and Grogu, slated for a 2026 theatrical release.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is set for a notable comeback under the Disney banner. Just last year, in 2023, shortly after Oswald entered the public domain, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole was announced as a horror film featuring the classic character and starring Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson.
