Osmos Returns to Google Play with Revamped Port

May 05,22

The acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, Osmos, is back on Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected the title with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning physics-based puzzle where players absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey themselves. Its simple yet engaging premise made it a hit, but Android users have been unable to experience it until now.

Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos returns to Google Play, optimized for modern Android devices. Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update following Apportable's closure. This resulted in the game's removal due to incompatibility with current (64-bit) Android systems. The new port resolves these issues.

If glowing reviews and numerous awards aren't enough to convince you, the gameplay trailer above should seal the deal. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity, as its gameplay would likely be a viral sensation on platforms like TikTok today.

Osmos feels like a nostalgic trip back to a time when mobile gaming felt boundless. While many excellent brain-teasing mobile games exist, few match Osmos' elegant design. For a broader selection of top mobile puzzle games, explore our list of the 25 best puzzlers for iOS and Android.
