Okami 2 is Creator's Dream But Final Say Goes to Capcom
Hideki Kamiya's Plea for Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3: A Dream Hinging on Capcom
In a recent Unseen interview with Ikumi Nakamura, Hideki Kamiya reignited fan hopes for sequels to his beloved titles, Okami and Viewtiful Joe. Kamiya candidly expressed his strong desire, even responsibility, to complete Okami's unfinished narrative, citing its prematurely concluded storyline. He highlighted a past Twitter (X) tease with Nakamura hinting at a potential sequel and referenced a Capcom survey ranking Okami among the top seven games fans want to see a sequel for.
The longing for an Okami sequel isn't new; Kamiya previously discussed this in a 2021 interview, expressing his regret at leaving Capcom before fully realizing his vision. The expanded player base thanks to Okami HD only amplified this feeling.
For Viewtiful Joe 3, despite a smaller fanbase, Kamiya playfully lamented the incomplete narrative and his unsuccessful attempt to advocate for a sequel in the Capcom survey. His humorous comment, "The director himself is asking to make the game again but they won't even talk about it," perfectly encapsulates the situation.
The interview also highlighted the creative synergy between Kamiya and Nakamura, collaborators on Okami and Bayonetta. Nakamura's contributions to Bayonetta's design and world-building were praised by Kamiya, showcasing their shared creative vision. Nakamura shared anecdotes of their collaboration, emphasizing how her concept art helped shape Bayonetta's unique style.
Despite leaving PlatinumGames last year, Kamiya's passion for game development remains undimmed. Nakamura noted the rarity of seeing Kamiya in an independent role, emphasizing his dedication to creating memorable games. The interview ended with both expressing their hope for future projects and a continued desire to impact the gaming world.
The interview's impact is undeniable. The fate of Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3 rests heavily on Capcom's decision. Until then, fans eagerly await any official announcements regarding these beloved franchises.
