Nvidia RTX 5060 Launches: Consider Waiting Before Buying

May 21,25

Nvidia unveiled the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti in April 2025, and now the more budget-friendly RTX 5060 is hitting the market, following its showcase at Computex.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 starts at an attractive $299, featuring 3,840 CUDA cores spread across 30 Streaming Multiprocessors, making it a solid choice for 1080p gaming. Nvidia boasts impressive performance from the RTX 5060 at this resolution, claiming it can achieve up to 223 fps in Doom: The Dark Ages on max settings, albeit with 4x multi-frame generation enabled.

Multi-Frame Generation is a key feature Nvidia is promoting across this generation of GPUs, and even though the RTX 5060 is the entry-level model, it fully supports this technology along with the entire DLSS 4 suite. However, with only 30 SMs, there are limitations to what DLSS can achieve.

It's important to note that the $299 price is just a starting point. While there will be some models at this price, many RTX 5060 variants will be pricier, offering extras like factory overclocking and RGB lighting.

Reviews Are Coming... Later

Despite the RTX 5060's affordability, it's wise to hold off on purchasing until independent reviews are available. Nvidia's performance claims are based on Multi-Frame Generation being active, and we need real-world data to see how it performs without these enhancements.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a bit longer for those reviews. Unlike previous launches in this generation, such as the RTX 5090, Nvidia isn't providing early drivers to the press. This means we might not see comprehensive reviews for the first week or so of the RTX 5060's release. While it's expected to be a capable 1080p card, the rest of the Blackwell series has shown limited generational improvements.

It's possible the RTX 5060 will exhibit similar performance gains as the RTX 5070 did over its predecessor, especially in traditional gaming without frame generation. When questioned about the performance uplift compared to the RTX 4060, Nvidia stated the 5060 could deliver up to double the performance with frame generation enabled, but only about 20% in games without ray tracing or frame generation – and that's under optimal conditions.

As with any significant tech investment, waiting for reviews is advisable to ensure you're getting the best value. Those reviews are on their way, but they might take a few days to appear.
