Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

May 12,25

The unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 through its announcement trailer immediately highlights a significant change in size compared to its predecessor. The trailer showcases the original Switch's Joy-Con controllers detaching, followed by the tablet section expanding into a larger form. This evolution signals Nintendo's shift towards embracing larger portable gaming devices, akin to the Steam Deck and iPad, and moving further from the compact handhelds of its past.

While Nintendo hasn't released official size dimensions for the Switch 2, we can estimate its size based on the trailer and a recent hands-on experience with a mock-up at CES 2025, courtesy of peripheral designer Genki. The trailer's design closely matches the Genki mock-up, giving us confidence in our measurements.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement is the diagonal length of the display, not including the bezels, aligning with earlier 2024 rumors. The screen is expected to be about **177mm wide and 99mm tall**. If accurate, this would mean the Switch 2's screen is nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD, and **66% larger in overall area**—a significant upgrade that promises a more immersive gaming experience, assuming the display technology is up to par.

Comparing the Switch 2's display to other handhelds, it's **45% larger diagonally** and **111% larger in surface area** than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 is **14% larger diagonally** and **30% larger in total area**. In the era of portable PCs, the Switch 2's screen will surpass even the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch display, being **8% larger diagonally** and **11% larger in overall area**.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

Given the larger screen, the entire console naturally grows in size. The original Switch already required sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 seems destined for cargo pants or bags. Measurements from the Genki mock-up suggest the **Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**, including the Joy-Cons. This is a **25% increase** in size over the original Switch's dimensions of 239mm by 102mm.

The Switch 2 would also be **61% larger** than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), yet **12% smaller** than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). While we couldn't measure the depth precisely, indications are that it remains similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The trailer's animation indicates that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers will retain a similar width to the original but will be taller. Our analysis suggests that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons are likely to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**, which is a **13% increase** in size over the original Joy-Cons.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

By subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is **31% larger** than the original Switch's screen unit, accommodating the 8-inch 16:9 screen with an approximate 11mm bezel on the sides and 8mm bezel on the top and bottom—slimmer on the sides than the original Switch.

These measurements are our best estimates based on available data and may differ from the official dimensions when released by Nintendo. However, given our hands-on experience with the Genki mock-up, we believe these figures to be quite reliable. We anticipate the Switch 2 to be around **25% larger** than the original when we finally get to experience it firsthand later this year.
