Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: Official 1080p vs Hori's 480p Piranha Plant
Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera boasts a modest resolution of 480p, which falls short compared to Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera's 1080p capability. The UK My Nintendo Store has confirmed these specifications, shedding light on the differences between the two.

Despite its lower resolution, the officially licensed Hori Piranha Plant camera comes at a more budget-friendly price than Nintendo’s $49.99 camera. It's worth noting that the Nintendo Switch 2 supports a variety of camera options, including its own camera accessory and any compatible USB-C camera. Both the Hori and Nintendo cameras are set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.
The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality: the part housing the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing for direct placement on the Switch 2. This feature enhances its portability, something Nintendo's camera does not offer. Additionally, users can close the plant's mouth to cover the lens, providing a playful way to control privacy.
Nintendo fans were taken aback by the 480p resolution of the Piranha Plant camera. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" pondered redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found it amusing, suggesting, "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Meanwhile, pokemonfitness1420 questioned, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"
During last week's Nintendo Direct, the Switch 2's GameChat functionality was introduced, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature enables players to watch each other play the same or different games, and with a camera, they can see each other as well. The built-in microphone proves reliable across various gaming environments, enhancing the multiplayer experience. The C button's chat menu is poised to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most impactful online initiative in decades.
