Nintendo Console Rankings Revealed

May 20,25

With the much-anticipated reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has officially confirmed the launch of its latest console. Boasting over four decades of experience in video game hardware, Nintendo's latest offering seems to take a cautious approach, yet we're eager to uncover what innovative features it might bring to the table. While we've dissected the Switch 2 trailer in detail elsewhere, let's take a moment to reflect on Nintendo's storied past.

Over the past five decades, Nintendo has introduced eight home consoles—the NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the Switch—as well as five handheld devices—the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS. But which of these iconic systems reigns supreme? I've attempted to rank them using an IGN Tier List, considering both the innovation of the hardware and the enduring quality and legacy of their game libraries. Here's a glimpse at my personal tier list:

Simon Cardy's Nintendo Console Tier List

The NES holds a special place in my heart as my first console, with unforgettable memories of playing classics like Super Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, and the challenging Hook. It's a no-brainer for the S tier. The Switch, with its innovative hybrid design (despite issues like stick drift), and masterpieces like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Odyssey, also earns its spot at the top.

Disagree with my rankings? Do you believe the Virtual Boy outshines the N64? Feel free to create your own tier list and compare your S, A, B, C, and D tiers with the IGN community.
