Netflix Cancels Six Indie Games, Including Don't Starve Together
Netflix has been making some strategic adjustments to its gaming lineup, and recently, they've announced the cancellation of six previously hyped games. If you were eagerly awaiting to play titles like Don’t Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, Compass Point: West, Lab Rat, Rotwood, or Thirsty Suitors on Netflix Games, unfortunately, those plans have been shelved.
This move is part of Netflix's ongoing effort to refine its gaming portfolio. The company seems to be shifting focus towards narrative-driven experiences and games inspired by their popular shows and movies, sidelining some indie titles in the process. This isn't the first time Netflix has pulled the plug on a game; remember Crashlands 2, which was dropped even after beta testing began in certain regions.
For those who were looking forward to these games, there's some good news. Most of the titles are still slated for release on other platforms. For instance, Don’t Starve Together, originally announced in June 2024 as part of a trio of Klei Entertainment games coming to Netflix, is now set to hit mobile devices via Playdigious. Similarly, Rotwood, another Klei title, is available in early access on Steam. Lab Rat, the third Klei game, has also been dropped by Netflix.
Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, a cozy life sim, was initially slated for a fall 2024 launch but has been delayed to early 2025. The absence of the Netflix Games logo from its website further confirms its departure from the Netflix lineup.
Compass Point: West, developed by Next Games (a company owned by Netflix), was one of the earliest announced titles for the platform, making its cancellation particularly notable. Thirsty Suitors, a stylish, story-driven RPG developed by Outerloop Games and published by Annapurna Interactive, was also set to come to mobile via Netflix but has now been excluded.
In the meantime, Netflix is expanding its narrative-driven offerings. Netflix Stories is set to add popular shows like Ginny & Georgia and Sweet Magnolias later this year, aligning with their new focus.
For more on what Netflix Games has to offer, you can explore their current lineup on the Google Play Store.
Stay tuned for more updates on Netflix's evolving gaming strategy and other exciting news like the upcoming additions to Netflix Stories.
