NBC Exec Reveals Why They Canceled Suits LA: 'We Had To Make Some Hard Decisions'
Suits is one of those beloved fan favorites, a show that has held strong for nearly 15 years since its debut on USA in 2011. The series saw a significant revival in recent years thanks to its full availability on Netflix, sparking countless binge-watching marathons — yet even that renewed popularity couldn’t save the new spin-off, Suits LA, which was canceled alongside NBC’s fall schedule announcement. Why? Jeff Bader, President of Program Planning Strategy at the brand, shared the reasoning behind the decision.
“It’s always tough to decide which shows to bring back, and Suits had a relatively short run, but it simply hasn’t connected with audiences the way we hoped,” Bader told Variety after the fall lineup was revealed.
“There are countless possible reasons people are speculating about, but unfortunately, it just hasn’t demonstrated the potential to grow for us moving forward.”

We evaluated each show’s performance across both linear and digital platforms, identifying which ones showed real promise for future growth. We examined their stability on linear TV, their traction on digital, and whether they were gaining or losing momentum. That’s how we made these difficult choices.”
Bader also confirmed that NBCUniversal routinely considers moving canceled shows to Peacock — but Suits LA was not granted that opportunity.
As for the shows that survived the cuts, Bader explained what made them stand out, particularly as the network made room for sports programming with the NBA claiming Tuesday nights.
“We analyzed week-to-week and episode-to-episode performance on both linear and digital platforms to pinpoint which shows had the strongest ratings trajectory,” Bader said to the outlet. “On the creative side, our teams did the same — evaluating which series had the greatest potential to attract new viewers. These were the two shows that rose to the top.”
Suits aired for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019. The revival, which premiered in February, stars Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, and Bryan Greenberg. Original Suits cast members including Rick Hoffman, David Costabile, and lead Gabriel Macht all appeared in the new series. Suits creator Aaron Korsh served as creator and executive producer of the spin-off, which aired its final episode on May 11, 2025.
