MultiVersus Fans Applaud Season 5 Updates as #SaveMultiVersus Trends

May 13,25

MultiVersus is set to close its doors when Season 5 concludes in May, but a recent update that significantly increased combat speed has reignited the community's passion for the game. Fans are now enjoying its gameplay more than ever before, sparking a #SaveMultiVersus movement across social media platforms.

The Warner Bros. platform fighting game community eagerly anticipated the launch of its fifth and final season on February 4 at 9am PT. Developer Player First Games had announced plans to end the project last week, revealing that the update would introduce DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny as the last playable characters. Contrary to expectations of a melancholic farewell, the update introduced sweeping changes to movement and combat speed, resulting in a more dynamic and fast-paced experience. This fundamental shift, long requested by players, has arrived just as the game nears its end.

Players first noticed the accelerated combat after Player First released a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter. For veterans of the free-to-play Warner Bros. fighting game, the changes are striking, with characters now able to chain combos and move across the screen at unprecedented speeds. This marks a significant departure from the criticized floaty gameplay during the MultiVersus beta test in 2022 and even surpasses the speed introduced when it relaunched in May of the previous year.

According to the Season 5 update patch notes, the increased combat speed stems from a reduction in hitpause "across most attacks in the game." This adjustment allows for faster combo execution, regardless of your main character. Specific characters like Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, and Black Adam have received additional speed boosts, especially when using certain aerial attacks. Meanwhile, Garnet's ringout potential has been adjusted to balance her already fast gameplay.

With Season 5, MultiVersus has transformed into an almost entirely new experience, and players are finding much more to enjoy than just the two new characters. However, this excitement is overshadowed by the impending shutdown scheduled for May 30. The closure will end all seasonal content updates and remove the game from digital storefronts, as Warner Bros. Games will completely disable online play, leaving only offline modes available.

The community is left in shock and frustration as MultiVersus finally achieves the gameplay they've long desired, right before its closure. X user @PJiggles_ described MultiVersus as "the most interesting bad game in existence," referencing its tumultuous journey from beta to relaunch and now its combat speed enhancement. Professional Super Smash Bros. player Jason Zimmerman (Mew2King) questioned why the movement speed was increased now rather than earlier.

One Reddit user remarked, "I know everybody's been playing the blame game when there likely isn't a single individual or even group who deserves the entirety of the blame, but man, if this was how the relaunch started off, we could’ve really had something. (Apex Legends) is probably one of the worst monetization schemes out there but it lasted so long because it nailed the fundamentals at the start."

The sentiment among players is one of bittersweet celebration and mourning. Reddit user Desperate_Method4032 stated that the Season 5 update addressed "every issue I had with the game," noting improvements like refined shield animations that enhance the game's polish. Despite the shutdown announcement, they expressed hope that Warner Bros. might reconsider, saying, "I'm not naïve. Just a fan with tons of love for the characters showcased in this game. But is it so wrong to have just a LITTLE bit of hope that the game will make a comeback? There's just far too much potential to let things end like this. Not when the game finally feels like it found its footing."

Despite fans' hopes, Player First and Warner Bros. remain committed to their shutdown plan for this summer. MultiVersus game director Tony Huynh shared closing thoughts on X, addressing long-standing player concerns. Warner Bros. has also disabled real-money transactions since January 31, with the Season 5 premium battle pass being offered for free as a final gesture to players.

MultiVersus will officially shut down at 9 am PT on May 30. As Warner Bros. moves forward with its plans, players are finding solace in creating and sharing memes, celebrating the game's final moments as it meets the high expectations set by its community.
