Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development

Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by strongly suggesting a potential Minecraft 2 is in the works. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed his current development focus: a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with a first-person, tile-based dungeon crawler (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he explicitly stated his openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.

The poll, conducted on January 1st, overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft 2 option, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. This overwhelming support reflects the enduring popularity of the original game, which boasts a daily player base of 45-50 million.

Subsequent posts confirmed Notch's seriousness, essentially declaring a "Minecraft 2" announcement. He expressed his desire to reignite his passion and cater to fan demand. He acknowledged the potential risks of creating a spiritual successor, noting the inherent challenges in replicating the success of the original. Despite these concerns, he's embracing the opportunity, particularly given the potential financial reward.

It's important to note that Notch sold the Minecraft IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project must avoid direct infringement on the existing IP. Notch assures fans that he respects Mojang and Microsoft's work and will proceed responsibly.

While eagerly awaiting Notch's potential new project, fans can anticipate upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," set for release later in 2025.
