The Rise of Ultron

Marvel Rivals’ Season 2.5 update brings Ultron as a new playable hero. On May 23, NetEase Games announced via Twitter (X) that Ultron will launch on May 30 after the Season 2.5 maintenance.

According to Marvel Rivals’ Dev Vision Vol. 06, Ultron is a Strategist who delivers consistent healing to his team. Equipped with a unique primary weapon and the sole ability to fly among Strategists, he unlocks new aerial strategies. His basic attacks fire three low-damage bursts followed by a powerful final shot.

His healing activates when he attaches a drone to allies, and his other abilities can overheal both the targeted hero and nearby teammates. His Ultimate ability damages enemies while simultaneously healing allies within its area.

This update also introduces Ultron’s X-Tron skin, inspired by his takeover of Cerebro and enhanced power, along with Groot’s Norse-inspired skin, Yggroot. These skins will be available after the Season 2.5 maintenance. As of now, NetEase has not disclosed their cost or whether they’ll be part of a bundle.

Season 2.5 Coming on May 30

Marvel Rivals launches Season 2.5 on May 30 following a 2–3 hour maintenance window. The update goes live on May 30 at 2 AM PDT / 9 AM UTC. Use the schedule below to find the exact start time in your region:

The update includes balance tweaks for multiple heroes: Captain America’s health has been reduced, Doctor Strange gains a slight damage boost, Emma Frost’s range has increased, and more. These adjustments aim to counter the current “dive meta,” where aggressive heroes like Iron Fist and Psylocke rapidly close distances to eliminate key targets such as Strategists and Duelists.

Following the Hellfire Gala Krakoa map, Season 2.5 introduces Arrako—the former sister island of Krakoa. After his assault on Hellfire Gala, Ultron retreated to his stronghold in Arrako. Heroes will now unite with the living island Krakoa to defend Arrako.

Additionally, a new Cerebro Database event will return, offering players a free Hawkeye – Binary Arrow skin. The event runs from May 30 at 9:00 AM UTC to June 27. Like its predecessor, Cerebro Database II tasks players with completing missions to unlock various rewards.

Team-Up Adjustments, New Experimental Mode, and More!

Season 2.5 adds six new Team-Ups, removes four, and makes further adjustments. New pairings include Rocket Network by Rocket Raccoon and Peni Parker, Stark Protocol by Iron Man and Ultron, and—returned by popular demand—Jeff-Nado by Jeff and Storm.

According to Creative Director Guangguang, over half of all Team-Up abilities have been revised since Season 0, and the team welcomes further community feedback.

A new limited-time experimental mode, “Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol,” launches on June 6. Guangguang explained, “In this mode, six players choose their hero lineups, craft unique builds, and enhance hero traits before battling others for victory.”

Based on the video and description, this mode shares traits with auto-chess games like League of Legends’ Teamfight Tactics and Hearthstone Battlegrounds, described as a “streamlined, strategic, numerical-based solo tactical experience.”

NetEase also confirmed that starting with Season 3, Marvel Rivals will shorten season length from three months to two—a change first announced in Dev Vision Vol. 05 on April 4. This shift means new heroes will be released monthly instead of two per season.

Marvel Rivals continues to expand its roster with Ultron and refine gameplay through extensive balance updates. NetEase is also broadening its appeal with the introduction of this new experimental mode.
