Marvel vs Capcom 2 Original Characters May Show Up in Capcom Fighting Games
Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Return
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of their return in a new game is "always there."
This renewed interest stems from the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This game introduced three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon, who have been largely absent from recent installments. Their only notable appearances since have been cameos in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and as cards in Capcom's card fighter games.
Matsumoto believes the collection's release will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, potentially sparking demand for their inclusion in future titles. He even suggested a crossover outside the Versus series, stating, "If there's enough interest, who knows? Maybe they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." He emphasized that this would provide the Capcom team with a wealth of creative options.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been in development for several years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with rollback netcode. However, he acknowledged the challenges involved, including scheduling and collaboration with external parties.
The re-release of classic titles, Matsumoto concluded, is a crucial step in energizing the community and gauging interest for future projects. The fate of Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon, therefore, rests largely with fan demand.
