The much-anticipated Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, an action-RPG designed for mobile platforms with a focus on the GPS-based gameplay experience, has been officially canceled. Although this comes as disheartening news for fans eagerly awaiting its release, Square Enix shared a glimmer of hope by confirming their continued efforts on Kingdom Hearts 4.

Originally planned for release in 2024, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link promised to immerse players in a brand-new storyline set within the realm of Scala ad Caelum. The game aimed to introduce players to a fresh chapter in the ongoing battle against the Heartless. However, in a brief yet poignant statement posted on the game’s X/Twitter account, Square Enix expressed regret for the cancellation, stating that it became evident the project wouldn’t meet the standards necessary to deliver sustained satisfaction to players over time.

The official statement, while apologetic, didn’t delve into specifics about the challenges faced during development. Nevertheless, the company extended gratitude to participants of the multiple closed beta tests, acknowledging their invaluable feedback. Despite the setback, Square Enix reassured fans that the beloved Kingdom Hearts series remains a priority and teased that significant progress is underway with Kingdom Hearts 4. This marks the first substantial update regarding the highly anticipated sequel since a cryptic teaser in January earlier this year.

Following its reveal in September 2022, complete with an evocative cinematic trailer, Kingdom Hearts 4 has largely flown under the radar. Series director Tetsuya Nomura hinted that this installment will mark a pivotal shift in the overarching narrative, steering it closer to its eventual conclusion after 22 years and across 18 games. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements as the series continues to evolve.
