Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Mar 14,25

Six years. That's how long fans have waited for Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece. Throughout this time, glimpses of Silksong have appeared and disappeared at various gaming events, even prompting a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release from Microsoft. The Game Awards came and went without a Silksong announcement, leaving fans yearning for news. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the answer to their prayers?

The internet thinks so, and it all started with a cake.

Sharp-eyed sleuths on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake on January 15th, accompanied by the cryptic tweet: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was undeniably suspicious. Nintendo did indeed announce the Switch 2 that day, leaving many unanswered questions about the new console. Did Pellen's tweet hint at this reveal? And if so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community went into full-blown detective mode. Fans reverse-image searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 would air on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This led fans to believe Pellen orchestrated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet, hinting at a Silksong announcement.

The speculation doesn't end there. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, and new name, little bomey. One compelling theory suggests "everydruidwaswr," at 15 characters, the Twitter handle limit, could be a cryptic clue, possibly referencing a Silksong NPC. The "little bomey" moniker is also under scrutiny, possibly referencing a type of Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location.

It’s important to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement listed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms. However, that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps even a timed exclusive? Or is this all just the enthusiastic ramblings of an eager fanbase?

We'll have a few months to find out. Until then, let's revisit everything revealed at Nintendo's Switch 2 showcase.
