Helldivers 2 Becomes Less Popular Among Steam Users

Helldivers 2 Update Hopes to Stop the Bleeding

Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead and celebrated as PlayStation's fastest-selling game at launch, has seen a dramatic drop in its player count on Steam. From a peak of 458,709 concurrent players, the game's numbers have dwindled to just 10% of that high.

A major contributor to this decline was the PSN debacle earlier this year. Sony's sudden mandate for a PSN account linkage with Steam purchases led to the exclusion of players from 177 countries without PSN access. This move not only barred new players but also left existing ones feeling alienated, resulting in widespread review bombing and a sharp drop in player numbers. Consequently, Helldivers 2 was removed from sale in regions without PSN services.

By the end of May, the game had already lost 64% of its peak players, with SteamDB reporting 166,305 players. The current 30-day average has further declined to approximately 41,860 concurrent players, marking a 90% drop from its initial peak.

It's worth noting that these statistics reflect only the Steam player base. A significant portion of the community continues to play on PS5, though Steam users were the majority.

In response to the declining player base, Arrowhead has announced the Freedom’s Flame Warbond update, set to launch on August 8, 2024. This update aims to revitalize interest by introducing new weapons, armor, and missions. Highlights include the eagerly awaited Airburst Rocket Launcher and two new capes and cards: Purifying Eclipse, a tribute to the Liberation of Choepessa IV, and The Breach, commemorating the final mission of the 361st Freedom’s Flame. These additions are intended to enhance the game's appeal and attract both new and returning players.

Helldivers 2 as a Live Service Game and Push for Content

Helldivers 2 Update Hopes to Stop the Bleeding

Helldivers 2's launch was a smashing success, selling 12 million copies in just two weeks, surpassing even God of War: Ragnarok. However, as a live service game, maintaining this momentum is crucial for Arrowhead and Sony. With no definitive end, Helldivers 2 can continuously introduce new cosmetics, gear, and content, fostering an ongoing cycle of engagement and monetization.

Despite facing challenges, Helldivers 2 remains a significant title in the co-op shooter genre. The decline in its player base underscores the importance of addressing player needs promptly. As Arrowhead continues to push for more content, it will be fascinating to observe how the game evolves and whether it can recapture the attention of its audience.
