Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is finally moving into full production. Bandai Namco and Legendary have officially signed an agreement to co-finance this much-anticipated project. Originally announced back in 2018, the project had remained largely silent until now, but with this recent development from Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America, fans can start getting excited about seeing the first-ever live-action Gundam film hit the big screen.

The film, which currently does not have an official title, will be both written and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth. It is set to be released in theaters worldwide. This marks a historic moment for the franchise, which has to date produced 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a hugely successful toy line, generating over $900 million annually.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have promised to steadily release more details as they are finalized. While no specific release windows or plot details have been shared yet, a teaser poster has been released to whet the appetite of eager fans.

Mobile Suit Gundam, which first aired in 1979, revolutionized the genre of 'real robot anime.' It moved away from the traditional narratives of clear-cut good versus evil, instead offering realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific exploration, and complex human dramas. The series treated robots as 'weapons' known as 'mobile suits,' sparking a significant cultural phenomenon.
