Guitar Hero Mobile Launch Stumbles with AI Announcement

Guitar Hero Mobile: A Rocky Start for a Legendary Franchise

The rhythm game genre might not have exploded in the West, but Guitar Hero was the undeniable exception. Now, this iconic franchise is poised for a mobile comeback, but Activision’s announcement stumbled badly out of the gate.

Instead of a thrilling trailer or press release, the reveal consisted of a jarring, AI-generated promotional image on Instagram. Predictably, the art overshadowed the exciting news, especially following similar controversy surrounding AI art in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Details about Guitar Hero Mobile’s look and feel are scarce. While the series had a previous mobile iteration almost 20 years ago (see image below), fans are understandably hoping for a significant upgrade.

A Sour Note: The Art Controversy

The AI-generated art used in the announcement drew widespread criticism for its poor quality and apparent lack of refinement, even by modern AI art standards. This misstep casts a long shadow, potentially dooming Guitar Hero Mobile before launch, especially with strong competition from games like Space Ape’s popular BeatStar.

Despite my excitement for Guitar Hero's return and its mobile potential, Activision's misstep is undeniable. The positive news is overshadowed by the negative reaction.
