Guerrilla Games appears to be brimming with confidence about its upcoming Horizon multiplayer project. Despite no official reveal yet, the studio is seemingly preparing for a massive influx of players for this anticipated live-service title.

Since the release of Horizon Forbidden West in 2022 and its Burning Shores DLC the following year, Guerrilla Games has been relatively quiet, focusing on smaller projects like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, whispers of a Horizon multiplayer game have circulated for years, with job listings dating back to 2018 hinting at its development. As we approach 2025, the existence of this project seems all but confirmed.

Although the exact announcement date for the Horizon multiplayer game remains a mystery, a recent job listing for a Senior Platform Engineer suggests that Guerrilla is aiming high with player numbers. The listing specifically requires "proven experience building and operating multi service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems across multiple public cloud providers." This indicates that Guerrilla is not only expecting over one million players but is also building a robust live-service infrastructure to support them.

On the flip side, this ambitious goal might also be a precautionary measure to ensure a smooth launch for the Horizon multiplayer game. The recent server issues faced by Helldivers 2 due to its unexpected popularity on PS5 and PC serve as a cautionary tale. Guerrilla may be keen to avoid similar problems, ensuring that players experience no difficulties during the game's onboarding process. While there's no guarantee the Horizon multiplayer game will achieve the same level of success as Helldivers 2, Guerrilla's preparedness is commendable.

Given that the Horizon multiplayer game has been in development for several years, and assuming there are no major setbacks, Guerrilla might be poised to unveil this live-service title soon. A few months ago, another job listing suggested a new Horizon game could launch in 2025. With the third mainline Horizon entry still some time away, this could very well be the long-awaited multiplayer project.
