GTA Games Depart Netflix Lineup Soon

Dec 14,24

Netflix Games is losing two Grand Theft Auto titles next month. Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will be removed from the Netflix Games catalog on December 13th.

Why are these games leaving?

The licensing agreements between Netflix and Rockstar Games for these two titles are expiring. This is standard practice for Netflix, which licenses games similarly to how it licenses movies and TV shows. A "Leaving Soon" label will appear on the games before their removal. The initial agreement was for a 12-month period, and the games launched a year ago.

What happens next?

Netflix subscribers who haven't finished these games can purchase them individually or as part of a trilogy bundle from the Google Play Store. Each game is $4.99, or the entire trilogy is $11.99.

While this is different from the sudden removal of other titles in the past (like Samurai Shodown V and WrestleQuest), it's noteworthy that Rockstar Games isn't renewing the license, despite Netflix gaining subscribers in 2023 partly due to the GTA trilogy's inclusion.

There are rumors of a future collaboration between Rockstar and Netflix, potentially bringing remastered versions of Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and Chinatown Wars to the platform.
