GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges Ahead with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

May 25,25

The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has surged into high gear following the release of Trailer 2. With the project's Discord server bustling with activity, Garza, who oversees the server, shared with IGN, "It really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The project, which now boasts nearly 400 members, is diving deep into the wealth of new information provided by Trailer 2.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza emphasized. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord was born in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans believe were cleverly referenced by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. The project's mission is to craft the most precise GTA 6 map possible. Before Trailer 2, their efforts were grounded in those leaks and the content from Trailer 1 released in December 2023.

The latest iteration of the GTA 6 map, version v0.049, was released at the end of March by project lead DuPz0r. However, with the influx of new details from Trailer 2, this map is already outdated. The community is now working towards a more comprehensive and accurate representation of the game's world.

Rockstar's recent reveal not only confirmed plot details and introduced characters but also released 70 new screenshots and unveiled new explorable locations in the state of Leonida, GTA 6's rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations include Vice City, mirroring Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the striking Mount Kalaga near the state’s northern border.

The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of every element shown, striving to align these fictional spaces with their real-world inspirations to further refine the GTA 6 map. Once completed, DuPz0r will release an updated map, offering fans the most detailed preview of what to expect from GTA 6 upon its May 2026 release.

Should Rockstar release more assets or gameplay footage before then, the volunteers are ready to update their work again. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-made map with the actual game, revealing just how close their efforts came to the mark.

However, the looming threat from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, hangs over the project. In March, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 halted their work after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

Last year, Garza expressed a "mild concern" about potential action from Take-Two. "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community," he noted. "However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."

While we await further developments, stay tuned for more on GTA 6, including all the details we've uncovered so far and the latest fan theories inspired by Trailer 2.
