Neill Blomkamp's Studio Revives Game Informer, Staff Returns

Just over six months after GameStop discontinued its operations in August 2024, Game Informer is officially relaunching with its full editorial team returning to action.

In a 'Letter From the Editor,' Game Informer Editor-In-Chief Matt Miller confirmed that Gunzilla Games has acquired the rights to Game Informer from GameStop, with plans to restore not just the editorial staff but also production teams and broader operations.

For those new to the company, Gunzilla Games develops and publishes the free-to-play extraction battle royale title Off the Grid, currently available in Early Access. The studio also created GunZ, a Layer-1 blockchain ecosystem designed to support community-driven economies in major AAA games such as Off the Grid. Notably, Neill Blomkamp, director of films like District 9 and Chappie, serves as Gunzilla's chief creative officer and co-founder.

In his announcement, Miller also noted that Gunzilla Games emphasized Game Informer’s continued independence as an editorial platform. According to Miller, the new owners firmly supported the team's vision, ensuring that editorial choices—including content selection and reporting methods—remain free from outside influence.

As part of the relaunch, Game Informer now operates under a new company named Game Informer Inc., restoring the website’s legacy spanning more than three decades after it went offline last August. The team has also bridged the gap in their publishing schedule, preparing dozens of new reviews covering games released during the hiatus, along with their Best of 2024 awards feature.

The print edition of Game Informer will make a comeback as well, although at a later stage. Miller shared that the team aims to deliver a magazine that’s more substantial and refined than previous versions. Additional plans include introducing membership and subscription benefits in the coming weeks, expanding video, streaming, and feature coverage, and collaborating with a wider array of experts and partners.
