Fortnite Makes Another Big Change to Master Chief Skin
In a surprising turn of events, *Fortnite* has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for The Master Chief skin following intense community backlash. Initially, Epic Games had announced that this coveted style would no longer be available, sparking widespread discontent among fans. However, the developers have now reversed their decision, ensuring that players can once again unlock the Matte Black style.
December is a bustling month for *Fortnite* enthusiasts, filled with exciting events like Winterfest. This year's event has been widely celebrated, introducing a plethora of new NPCs, quests, and items. Yet, the return of certain skins, including The Master Chief, has stirred controversy. The Master Chief skin, which made its debut in *Fortnite* back in 2020 and last appeared in the Item Shop in 2022, was eagerly anticipated by the community for its 2024 comeback. The initial announcement on December 23 that the Matte Black style would be removed contradicted the original 2020 promise that the style could be unlocked anytime after purchasing the skin and playing on Xbox Series X/S. Fortunately, Epic Games quickly responded to fan feedback and reinstated the unlockable option.
The Master Chief Skin's Controversial Return to Fortnite
The decision to remove the Matte Black style was met with significant criticism, with some fans even suggesting it could lead to issues with the FTC. This comes on the heels of the FTC issuing $72 million in refunds to *Fortnite* players for the use of "dark patterns" by Epic Games. The change not only affected new buyers but also those who had purchased the skin back in 2020, preventing them from unlocking the style they were promised.
The controversy surrounding The Master Chief skin is not isolated. For example, the recent reintroduction of the Renegade Raider skin has also caused a stir, with some long-time *Fortnite* players threatening to quit over the move. Additionally, there are calls from the community for an OG style for those who bought The Master Chief skin at its launch. While Epic Games has addressed the Matte Black style issue, the likelihood of adding an OG style seems slim.
