Fortnite Backtracks on Contested Skin Decision

Jan 12,25

The iconic Master Chief, the face (albeit masked) of the Halo franchise, is a highly sought-after skin in Fortnite. His return to the in-game shop after a two-year hiatus was met with much fanfare, but a small detail soured the celebration.

Initially, a special Matte Black style for the skin was offered exclusively to players using Xbox Series S|X consoles. For a considerable period, Epic Games advertised this style as perpetually obtainable. Therefore, the unexpected announcement of its removal was met with considerable backlash.

Some disgruntled fans even believed the move violated legal guidelines and began preparations for a class-action lawsuit. However, Epic Games reversed course within 24 hours. The Matte Black style is now available to all Master Chief skin owners who play a single game on an Xbox Series S|X console.

This appears to be the most prudent outcome. Given the holiday season and many players celebrating Christmas, such a controversial move risked significantly damaging goodwill.
