Ex-Rockstar Dev: No More GTA 6 Trailers, Hype Sufficient
As the anticipation for more news on Grand Theft Auto 6 continues following the release of Trailer 1 in 2023, a former Rockstar developer has suggested that no more trailers should be released before the game's launch. Rockstar released GTA 6 Trailer 1 to record-breaking viewership in December 2023, yet since then, no further assets have been shared. This prolonged wait has sparked numerous conspiracy theories about the release of GTA 6 Trailer 2, ranging from analyzing holes in Lucia’s cell door net, bullet holes in cars, to scrutinizing registration plates. The most notable theory, the ongoing moon watch, accurately predicted the announcement date of Trailer 1 but was debunked as a hint for Trailer 2's release date.
The big question on everyone's mind is when GTA 6 Trailer 2 will be released. Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, hinted that fans might need to wait until closer to the game’s release, scheduled for fall 2025, for another glimpse. However, Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games technical director who worked on the series up until Grand Theft Auto 4, expressed on Twitter that if it were up to him, he wouldn’t release any more trailers. He believes the existing hype around GTA 6 and the element of surprise would amplify the impact of the game's release. In response to a fan's query about possibly announcing the release date without further trailers, Vermeij called it a "boss move."
Despite naming the first trailer as GTA 6 Trailer 1, suggesting more trailers to follow, Vermeij's comments raise questions about Rockstar's strategy. He mentioned Rockstar's decision to delay GTA 4 in July 2007, suggesting a similar "decision day" for GTA 6 might occur around the same time before its current release window. Vermeij hopes for clarity during Take-Two’s August earnings report.
In a March interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick emphasized the importance of maintaining anticipation and excitement for GTA 6, explaining that Rockstar prefers to release marketing materials close to the launch date to balance excitement and unmet anticipation.
Mike York, a former Rockstar animator, shared on his YouTube channel that Rockstar is deliberately fueling conspiracy theories and speculation by staying silent on GTA 6 and Trailer 2. He believes this tactic creates allure and mystery, engaging the community and generating buzz without additional effort from the company. York also noted that Rockstar resists fan pressure to announce Trailer 2's release date, as it's an effective marketing strategy that fosters fan engagement and discussion.
While waiting for GTA 6, IGN offers insights from former Rockstar developers and industry experts on various related topics, including potential delays, the future of GTA Online, and performance expectations for the PS5 Pro.
