Exclusive: Tekken 8 Rage Art Controller Unveiled
This extensive review covers a month of using the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition controller across PC, PS5, PS4, and Steam Deck. Initially, the controller's modularity and "Pro" status were enticing, especially after positive experiences with the Xbox Elite (Gen 1) and DualSense Edge.
Unboxing the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition
Unlike standard controllers, this package includes the controller, a braided cable, a high-quality protective case, a six-button fightpad module, two gates, two analog stick caps, two d-pad caps, a screwdriver, and a blue wireless USB dongle. All items are neatly organized within the case. The included accessories are themed to match the Tekken 8 aesthetic; replacements aren't currently readily available, a point to consider.
Compatibility and Connectivity
The Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition officially supports PS5, PS4, and PC. Testing confirmed seamless out-of-the-box functionality on the Steam Deck (using the dongle and PS5 mode). Wireless use on PS4 and PS5 requires the same dongle, with successful testing on both consoles. This dual-console compatibility is a significant advantage.
Features and Customization
The controller's modular design is a highlight, allowing for symmetric or asymmetric stick layouts, a fightpad for fighting games, and adjustable triggers, thumbsticks, and d-pads. This adaptability caters to various game genres. The adjustable trigger stops are particularly useful for racing and other games. Multiple d-pad options are included, though the reviewer preferred the default diamond shape.
However, the lack of rumble, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and gyro/motion control is a notable drawback, especially considering the availability of budget controllers with rumble. This absence of rumble, seemingly a PS5 third-party limitation, is disappointing for a controller at this price point.
The four paddle-like buttons are a plus, though the reviewer wished for removable, more traditional paddles. These buttons were effectively mapped to L3, R3, L1, and R1.
Design and Feel
The controller boasts an attractive design with vibrant colors and Tekken 8 branding. While comfortable, it feels slightly lightweight. The build quality is decent, though not as premium as the DualSense Edge. The grip is excellent, enabling extended gaming sessions without fatigue.
PS5 Performance
On PS5, the controller functions well, offering touchpad support and all standard DualSense buttons (excluding the aforementioned missing features). However, it cannot power on the PS5, a limitation seemingly common to third-party PS5 controllers.
Steam Deck Performance
The controller's out-of-the-box compatibility with the Steam Deck is excellent, correctly identified as a PS5 controller with full share button and touchpad functionality.
Battery Life
A significant advantage over the DualSense and DualSense Edge is the vastly superior battery life. The low-battery indicator on the touchpad is also a welcome feature.
Software and iOS Compatibility
The controller's software, available only on the Microsoft Store, was untested due to the reviewer's lack of Windows access. However, the controller's plug-and-play functionality on other platforms was appreciated. Unfortunately, iOS compatibility testing proved unsuccessful.
Shortcomings
The controller's major drawbacks include the absence of rumble, a low polling rate, the lack of included Hall Effect sensors (requiring a separate purchase), and the necessity of a dongle for wireless operation. The low polling rate, a significant issue for competitive gaming, is particularly concerning. The additional cost for Hall Effect sensors is also a negative.
Final Verdict
After extensive use across multiple platforms and games, the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition is a good, but not great, controller. Its modularity and long battery life are strong points, but the lack of rumble, low polling rate, and extra costs for essential features (like Hall Effect sensors) detract from its overall value, especially at its price point. Potential improvements could elevate this controller to a top contender.
Review Score: 4/5
Note: Information on the lack of rumble has been updated.
