Sky: Children of the Light Origin Story Unveiled in Part One

Oct 07,25

As a longtime admirer of thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light, I've always been drawn more to its breathtaking art direction and emotional storytelling than its gameplay mechanics. Now the developers are raising the bar with their first in-game cinematic experience titled The Two Embers.

This marks an exciting milestone for thatgamecompany as they prepare to launch limited in-game screenings of The Two Embers: Part One starting July 21st. This wordless animated feature will unveil Sky's origin story through visual storytelling.

A Glimpse Into the Story

The Two Embers unfolds in two parts. The first installment follows two children - separated by time yet spiritually connected. Our story begins with an orphan living on the fringes of The Ruler's City, once prosperous but now crumbling.

The narrative takes flight when the child discovers an injured baby manatee, blossoming into a poignant exploration of loss, isolation, and small compassionate acts. Meanwhile, high above, the Ruler observes the decaying kingdom as a sinister storm gathers.

Through masterful use of imagery, orchestration, and raw emotion - without any dialogue - the film conveys profound grief while the manatee offers delicate hope. Sky has released our first official look at The Two Embers: Part One below:

Each week, a new chapter will unlock in Sky Cinema, a specially constructed in-game theater. Accompanying gameplay content will let players dive deeper into the unfolding narrative.

Pioneering In-Game Storytelling

Rather than traditional distribution, thatgamecompany innovates by embedding this cinematic experience directly within Sky's universe. This bold approach transforms the game into something more profound. Combined with Aurora's upcoming concert, The Two Embers elevates Sky into uncharted creative territory.

Produced in collaboration with Light & Realm and co-produced by Illusorium Studios and Orchid, this represents thatgamecompany's most ambitious transmedia project to date. Download Sky from the Google Play Store to experience this groundbreaking storytelling firsthand.
