Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Slow Box Office Start

Apr 11,25

Snow White, directed by Marc Webb of The Amazing Spider-Man fame, experienced a challenging debut at the box office, earning a domestic total of $43 million over its opening weekend. This figure marks one of the lowest opening weekend totals for a Disney live-action remake, falling short of the $45 million launch of 2019's Dumbo and below initial projections. Despite this, Snow White secured the second highest opening of 2025, trailing only behind Captain America: Brave New World, and topped the week's box office charts.

For comparison, other Disney remakes have seen much stronger starts, with 2019's The Lion King, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2016's The Jungle Book, and 2023's The Little Mermaid all surpassing $100 million in domestic earnings during their opening weekends.

Internationally, Snow White also had a modest beginning, pulling in $44.3 million, which brings the global box office total to $87.3 million according to Comscore estimates.

The film, a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1937 animated classic, features Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. With a reported production budget exceeding $250 million, Snow White faces a significant challenge to break even, especially when factoring in marketing expenses.

However, there is potential for a turnaround. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King, which opened to a disappointing $35.4 million domestically, ultimately grossed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is likely hoping for a similar 'sleeper hit' success with Snow White, amidst ongoing scrutiny over the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has earned $400.8 million globally after six weekends.

IGN's review of Snow White awarded it a 7/10, praising the film for its meaningful adaptation of the original story rather than merely replicating it.
